How this game works. If you have ever played any text adventure game, like Zork, or Adventure, you'll recognise the format right away. While there are significant differences between this game and the above mentioned, the basic idea is still the same.
This game is called a MUD (multi user dungeon game). This specific one is of a type called an LPMud. The LPMud system was design by Lars Pensj. As the name implies, mutliple players can be on the game at the same time and iteract with each other.
Time period.
The time period for this game would be considered the dark ages to middle ages. While you find modern concepts and items in this game, the general idea is to keep it in the past.
Game mechanics.
Players (that's you) can interact with the game and other players. You are able to use the 'say' command to talk to other players. There are NPC's (non player characters) in the game that you can interact with. The NPC's will appear player's, but you will easily be able to tell them apart from real players.
It is also possible to fight in this game. To do this use the 'kill' command. It is advisable to find a weapon and some armour first. For every kill that you make, you will be given some experience points. The amount of experience depends on how hard the monster is. Be warned, it is also possible to die in this game. Killing other players is also possible but is discouraged.
A number of quests can also be solved. The adventurers guild will list the quests. Quests usually consist of solving a puzzle, killing an evil foe, or performing some other deed. Quests usually take any where from a 1/2 an hour to many hours of playing time.
The goal of the game.
The first goal of the game is to have fun playing it. While most people don't consider this a goal, it is the reason this game exists.
The second goal, and the one most people consider to be the true goal is to become a wizard. As you play the game you will gain experience points. This will help you advance levels. The higher the level, the stronger you become. To become a wizard you must advance to level 19 and solve all the necassary quests. The list of quests is in the town's Adventurer's Guild.
Once you're a wizard.
As a wizard you are able to program in the built in language. This allows you to extend the game by building your own rooms and objects. The language is called LPC and is like 'C' language. The built in editor, ed, allows you to edit file that describe your own rooms and objects. As a wizard, you will no longer be allowed to 'play' the game. You see, a wizard is given extra powers that a player does not have. With these extra powers it becomes too easy to 'win'. Wizards are also not allowed to interfere with players.
