Races

Your life in Frontier begins with only a name and a gender, but fret not: you can choose one of any number of races available. The race you select will affect how much experience it takes to raise a level, the amount of experience necessary to increase one of your stats by a point, what light levels are comfortable for you, the maximum for each stat, healing rates, hunger and thirst rates, and what genders are available for you to choose from. Some races even have special abilities, such as infravision, that other races lack.

Here are the races currently available to players and an indepth description about each of them.

Newbies are the starting race in Frontier. They have no discernable skills, no remarkable abilities, and no exceptional powers. Their existence is limited to players below Level 5 where a race choice becomes manditory. You can either exist as a Newbie until then and get a feel for exactly which race might suit you best, or you can choose your race immediately. Simply head to the Frontier Doctor's Office in town.

Humans are the main race in Frontier. Average in every way, they still seem to flourish better then any other race. If you don't have any idea what a human looks like, look in a mirror ;-) The maximum stats for a human are:

  Str:20   Int:20   Con:20   Dex:20

Elves tend to be somewhat shorter and slimmer than normal humans. Their features are finely chiseled and delicate, and they speak in melodic tones. Although they appear fragile and weak, as a race they are quick and strong. Elves are often considered frivolous and aloof, but they are not. They concern themselves with natural beauty and love the outdoors. Elves have a natural affinity for magic and things magical. Elves are smarter than most races. Their infravision allows them to see living creatures in their area no matter how dark it is. The maximum stats for an elf are:

  Str:18   Int:22   Con:21   Dex:21

Dwarves are short, stocky fellows, easily identified by their size and shape. They average 4 to 4.5 feet tall. They have ruddy cheeks, dark eyes, and dark hair. Dwarves tend to be dour and taciturn. They are given to hard work and care little for most humor. They are strong and brave and enjoy beer, ale, mead, and even stronger drink. Their chief love, however, is precious metal, particularly gold. Dwarves like the earth and being underground and have a strong dislike for the sea. Not overly fond of elves, they have a fierce hatred of orcs and goblins. They are ill-disposed toward magic and have little talent for it, but revel in fighting and warcraft. Though dwarves are suspicious and avaricious, their courage and tenacity more than compensate for these shortcomings. Dwarves are healther than most other races and heal quicker because of it. Their infravision allows them to see living creatures even in the darkest of areas. The maximum stats for a dwarf are:

  Str:20   Int:18   Con:25   Dex:18

Ogres are tall, brutish fellows. They average 6 to 8 feet tall and weigh twice as much as an average human. Their skin is a sickly yellow-brown color and often covered in warty protrusions of a darker color. They more than make up for their lack of intelligence with their incredible strength. Ogres are stronger than all other races. Their thick hide and increased strength make even an unarmed ogre a worthy opponent. The maximum stats for an ogre are:

  Str:25   Int:10   Con:20   Dex:22

Kender are general a jovial, child-like race. The stand about 3 to 4 foot high and strongly resemble humans. In fact, many times kender are mistaken as human children. They hold an extremely optimistic outlook on life and enjoy nothing more than to have a good time. Unfortunately, kender have no understanding of the concept of personal possessions and are, as a race, known to be kleptomaniacs. They have a tendency to steal small items from people around them without even knowing that they are doing it and don't mean any harm by it. Kender are more agile than all the other races, but are much weaker due to their size. The maximum stats for a kender are:

  Str:15   Int:20   Con:20   Dex:25

Nymphs are extremely beautiful females. They are born of the pure powers of nature and tend to prefer pristine outdoor locations and abhor adventuring in dark dungeons. Their ties to nature give them an increased healing rate. They enjoy nothing more than to spend their lives drinking and frolicking in the woods. Nymphs have the ability to sway males of any race to do what they want. Most men find it extremely difficult to resist this powerful suggestion spell and willingly do what ever the nymph requests. The max stats for a nymph are:

  Str:17   Int:17   Con:20   Dex:17

Satyr are a race that sprang from the primordeal powers of nature. They stand about 4 foot tall and are human in appearance from the waist up. From the waist down, they have goat legs that are covered in a coarse fur. Two small horns sprout from their brow. They enjoy nothing more than drinking and frolicking and are often found in the company of Nymphs. A satyr's connection with nature gives it an increased healing rate. The max stats for a satyr are:

  Str:18   Int:17   Con:20   Dex:17

Thranx are a race of giant insects. They are best described as a 6 foot tall praying mantis. They are extremely strong and quick and are protected by a hard, chitinous armour that covers their entire body. Thranx are extremely social and are linked mentally to all other thranx through their hive-mind. The connection to the hive not only allows thranx to share their thoughts with one another but also allows them to pool their spellpoints for use by any other hive member. It is very difficult for a thranx to keep a secret from another thranx because what is told to one thranx is often overheard by all others in the hive. Thranx are slow healers but have a strong natural armour and strong natural weapons. They are mentally connected to all other thranx through the hive-mind. The max stats for a thranx are:

  Str:22   Int:17   Con:18   Dex:25

Gargoyles are magical creations of living stone. They often stand some 6 feet tall and are extremely muscular in appearance. A large span of bat-like wings sprouts from their powerful shoulders. Although they heal slowly, the fact that they are made of stone gives them an incredible natural armour class and powerful natural weapons. Gargoyles have the ability to fly and their magical infravision allows them to see living creatures in complete darkness. The max stats for a gargoyle are:

  Str:22   Int:15   Con:22   Dex:18
